1957 Pontiac Safari Deluxe Sports Wagon
This two-door 1957 Pontiac Star Chief Custom Safari Station Wagon is one of only 1,292 built and has often been referred to the Pontiac Nomad since the two cars share most parts from the firewall back. That Nomad commonality is also why Safari wagons are very rare—many were cannibalized for Nomad restorations one of 1292 produced. This ’57 Safari was modified by previous owners who replaced the original 347-cubic-inch V8 with a 428-CI Pontiac V8 from a ’68 Bonneville rebuilt. The interior features the rare factory air conditioning controls and dashboard vents. The interior redone in newer cloth upholstery. The original 347-cubic inch V8 was replaced by the previous owner when he restored and modified the Safari. The 428-cu.in. OHV V8 came from a 1968 Pontiac Bonneville and was rebuilt. It’s topped with a four-barrel carburetor and is cooled by an aluminum radiator and an electric fan. The engine start's easily with a smooth idle. The automatic transmission is a Turbo 400 that has been rebuilt and shifts smoothly. The non-factory purple paint is “shiny and glossy”. The trim tag code HQQ indicates that the primary color was originally Charcoal Grey with the secondary color being Silver Beige. The tailgate has the correct shorter cables that were necessary to prevent the tailgate bars from contacting the bumper. The “Pontiac” tailgate letters are present and the tailgate bars aren’t pitted (a common problem). The chrome parts have been rechromed. The glass is very good and the seals are good with no leaks, windshield wipers have been converted to electric operation. The interior features a newer bench seat upholstered in gray cloth but the trim tag code 244 indicates that the car originally had Charcoal Gray leather upholstery. All the unique Custom Safari interior trim items (including the window moldings and headliner bows) are in good condition in the provided photos. The car has its rare factory air conditioning controls and dash vents and the system is in working condition, although the A/C compressor is a modern unit. The original steering wheel is uncracked in the provided photos. The heater and radio work. The carpet and headliner are both in “excellent” condition. The front brakes were upgraded to power disc brakes. The car drives straight with no play or vagueness, in the seller’s opinion. There are no reported issues with the bushings, shocks, or brakes. The Steel rims with Wide Whitewall Radials in good condition with Pontiac 1954 Script caps A box full of restoration documentation, receipts, dates, prices, mileage, and diagrams is included in the sale. 1954 Pontiac Hubcaps. The dashboard lights need a couple bulbs. This 1957 Pontiac Start Chief Custom Safari wagon is the Pontiac sibling of the Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad wagon. No current rust or any prior rust repairs. The engine has been upgraded with a 428-cu.in. from a ’68 Bonneville. Turbo 400 Transmission. This Safari is one of just 1,292 two-door models produced. The car has the rare-for-1957 factory air conditioning.
