This 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air two-door hardtop was purchased by my father in the early 1980s, and the refurbishment work in the late 1980s, included a repaint in Metallic Blue and White, after the body was nosed and decked. Power is provided by a 327ci V8 that was rebuild in 2012 and is topped with a dual-quad induction setup. The four-speed manual transmission is linked to a narrowed 9" rear end with a 3.73:1 limited-slip differential, and the chassis features power steering along with power-assisted front disc brakes. Inside, the bench seats are trimmed in white leather and accompanied by an aftermarket floor shifter and a column-mounted tachometer. Additional equipment includes an electric radiator fan and coated exhaust headers. I acquired the car in 2015. The hood, decklid, and side emblems were shaved, and details include dual chrome exhaust outlets, a fuel filler concealed above the left taillight, and chrome bumpers and trim. The chrome 15" American Racing Torq Thrust wheels are mounted with staggered BFGoodrich tires. The car is equipped with rear traction bars, power steering, and power-assisted front disc brakes. The interior features a split-folding front bench and a rear bench upholstered in white leather along with coordinated door panels and blue carpeting. Equipment includes a locking glovebox, an aftermarket shifter, and vent windows. The aftermarket three-spoke steering wheel frames a 110-mph speedometer and a column-mounted tachometer, and Stewart-Warner auxiliary gauges are mounted on each side of the radio. The five-digit odometer shows 95k miles, approximately 10k of which were added under current ownership. The 327ci V8 was installed in 2012 and features “double hump” heads along with a dual-quad induction system with an aluminum intake manifold and dual Carter carburetors. An electric radiator fan is installed, and coated headers feed into a dual exhaust system. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Muncie four-speed manual transmission and a narrowed 9" rear end with a 3.73:1 differential.
Decoding the trim tag reveals the following information: Style No: 56-1037D – 1956 Bel Air Two-Door Hardtop Body No: O 5571 – Oakland, California, assembly number Trim No: 579 19 – Ivory vinyl and Charcoal cloth Paint No: 701D – India Ivory and Onyx Black ACC: EZI – Tinted glass
This car is sweet to drive and turns heads everywhere it goes.
