1957 Chevrolet 150 Handyman Wagon
Something that grabs the attention of everyone who knows cars is a rare production vehicle that has been restored and improved to make it a show winning restomod favorite. This 1957 Chevy Handyman Wagon is a survivor, one of about 18,500 of these two door wagons produced that year. Most of them were workhorses, used up and eventually lost to time, but this particular car was well treated, and has come a long way since its original days as a 6 cylinder, stick shift, rubber mat, utilitarian hauler. This is now a grocery getter that will not only haul the groceries, but haul ‘em quick – and it looks doggone good doin’ it. Under the hood of this bright Competition Orange Handyman is a powerful late model 350 CID engine built to run with the big dogs. A lumpy, high lift cam gives it a distinctive lope, a performance intake manifold topped by a 650 cfm carburetor replaces the original throttle body injection, and the dual exhaust, with throaty Magnaflow mufflers give it a healthy growl. Behind the mill is a Gear Star built 200R4 automatic overdrive transmission that produces an aggressive launch, but yields economical highway mileage for road trips. The iconic stance is due to staggered steel belted radial tires on American Racing 5 spoke rims, and new CPP front and rear coilover suspension and power disc brakes at all four corners were just installed. The dramatic, flawless exterior is painted in blended U-Tech and the interior is nicely finished with 6 way front leather bucket seats from an Impala, a matching vinyl rear bench seat, and full upholstered detailing throughout from the headliner to the spare tire well. The smooth dash is a custom number with analog AutoMeter gauges, a top shelf AM/FM/CD/MP3 sound system, and original temperature controls for the air conditioning and heat. Other features include the Ididit chrome tilt column, a Grand signature wood grained steering wheel, Lokar floor shifter, and power windows. A big aluminum radiator keeps things cool under the hood, the windshield and all of the dark tinted glass is new, and the underside of the wagon is as clean as the rest of this outstanding ride. The photos of this ride do not capture the brilliance of the paint, nor can the high quality of the work done on this wagon be shown. A wagon load of new Danchuck chrome and stainless trim puts a fine finish on this peerless Chevy. Every detail has been urged to perfection. This car has been a work in progress since originally restored and upgraded in 2006 and it still looks like it might have been built last week. The odometer shows it has been driven just over 13,000 miles since this rust free, Bondo free, show quality ride was reborn. Anyone who appreciates a well done Tri-Five restomod would be proud to own this car.
